KATHLEEN AVE
Packing a Punch
Status: Completed, August 2016
Located on Kathleen Avenue, the subdivided lot presents a compact 234 m² footprint in the form of an irregular parallelogram. Its constrained geometry is compounded by a pronounced slope, creating a technically demanding site that required careful spatial and structural planning. Rather than viewing these conditions as limitations, the design leverages them to shape a highly efficient and responsive home.
The property’s position alongside established parkland introduced a valuable opportunity: elevated living spaces could capture framed outlooks toward greenery and the Perth skyline beyond. This informed a vertical planning strategy that maximises outlook, light, and ventilation while preserving privacy.
Although situated within an inner-city suburban context, the design intentionally prioritises connection to landscape and outlook. Through considered planning and sectional organisation, the home creates a sense of retreat — balancing density with openness and transforming a constrained site into a calm, elevated living environment.
